TYPES OF UNITED STATES STUDY VISA

For the dependents of students, embassy offers different types of visa (F-2 or M-2).

F-1 Student Visa : The international students applying for joining a full-time course in university or college, high school, private elementary school, seminary, conservatory and another academic institution including language training programs are issued F1 student visa by United States Embassy.

M-1 Vocational Student Visa : The students who get enrolment in vocational or other non-academic institutions (other than a language training program) are sanctioned M1 visa provided the institution must be recognized.

The US embassy primarily offers three types of Student visas: F1, M1, and J1. Most probably, the visa type you will need would be an F1 student visa. PART TIME JOBS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IN USA

There are several categories of employment during the term of your stay as an F-1 student in the United States. Part time jobs in USA can be broadly categorised as on-campus jobs and off-campus jobs. Let us understand both of these one by one:

ON-CAMPUS JOBS

On-campus employment is the category most freely permitted by the USCIS regulations, and it does not require USCIS approval. For on-campus work, an F-1 student is subject to the following rules:

  1. You must maintain valid F-1 status
  2. You can work up to 20 hours per week while school is in session
  3. You can work full-time on campus during holidays and vacation periods if you intend to register for the next academic semester.
  4. The employment may not displace (take a job away from) a U.S. resident

OFF-CAMPUS JOBS

Rules for off-campus jobs are relatively stricter for international students. An international student must adhere to the following conditions:

  1. You must maintain valid F-1 status
  2. You must obtain the necessary work authorisation in the form of OPT or CPT. These jobs can be either related to your field of study or as a part of curriculum.
  3. You can also work off-campus if you provide evidence of severe economic hardship.
  4. It is illegal to work off-campus for international students if they do not have the adequate authorization.
